JUMP 2.0

We are proud to release JUMP 2.0, the second episode in our ongoing R&D series to explore new tools and techniques. In this episode, our hero Leaf takes a pause to refuel for the next 'jump' to another world. “ We're slowly learning how the technology of Leaf's gear works, how maybe there's other Jumpers using the same vending machine. Maybe one day we will learn about the origin of her equipment!” says Kim Fredette, technical lead.

The goal for JUMP 2.0 was to road test an Unreal engine pipeline, as well as try out Move AI software for motion capture data. “As an animator I'm really excited about what we learned from using the Move AI motion capture system,” says JUMP director Wiley Townsend. “All that you need is an iPhone and the data is really clean. Even in keyframe animated projects, I foresee animators using this as a more advanced version of reference footage.” Check out our workflow using Move.AI below.

For this chapter of JUMP, we took Leaf to a more realistic world to test out some of the advantages of the Unreal engine. We were excited that we were able to achieve a more graphic and stylized effect in lighting and comp. “We wanted to use lights as a language. Each colour represents a potential new world and the choices Leaf can take on her journey.” said art director Marta Grasso.
